Customized engineering solutions enabled a complex form while providing an optimal acoustical environment inside the performance halls.
The design called for a glass-enclosed atrium connecting the two main performance halls to one another and the city beyond. To support the need for transparency, Arup's structural engineers designed a cable-supported glass roof, enabling a column-free space. Nonlinear analysis and form-finding were used to balance the effects of gravity, wind, snow and other conditions and determine the most structurally efficient shape for the cabling. Splaying... >>> |

Cycling inspired the concept for the Velodrome. The bicycle is an ingenious ergonomic and aerodynamic object which is honed to unrivalled efficiency and beauty. From the beginning of the design process, we wanted to apply the same level of design creativity and rigor of engineering that goes into the design and manufacture of a bicycle to the building itself. It was important to us that this not serve to mimic but rather that it manifest itself as a three-dimensional response to the functional requirements of the stadium. By applying the same thought developments and form-finding approach,... >>> |
