Project Brief
The design of a new 66 bed care home for Vesta Care on the site of the existing Mount Hermon Care Home, Brighton Road, Lancing.
Outcome
In late 2019 Carless + Adams Ltd were approached by the client as their existing building was reaching the end of its useful life, and regularly created challenging issues for the day to day running of the home. Due to the converted nature of the existing buildings it was no longer suited to providing the modern, professional, innovative care the client strives to deliver.
The proposed building will regenerate the site, bringing it back to sustainable and meaningful use, and will continue to provide and also to exceed the high standard of living and communal accommodation.
The proposed building will be accessed from Brighton Road via two of the existing site entrances, with the third access adjacent to the pedestrian crossing closed off. It is designed and located so that it is no closer to the existing property No. 83 to the south-west and steps up from two to three storeys to minimise any overlooking and improve the relationship and allow more light and outlook to the existing dormer. The north-east corner has been angled to mirror the Beach Green Hotel and address the road junction/mini roundabout.
To provide the best quality of care, we proposed splitting the building into independent wings over three floors, with 19 bedrooms on the ground floor, 25 bedrooms on the first and 22 bedrooms on the second floor. In addition to the building the proposed garden area is important to the wellbeing of the residents and it is our intention that a number of distinct garden areas will be created, these could include; a sensory garden; wander route garden; an allotment area and a ‘hen-power’ area.
A green roof has been introduced to the single storey rear extension to increase the biodiversity of the site and give the residents who’s bedrooms over look visual interest. Where possible, natural light has been allowed to enter the corridors at their ends to give a light and airy appearance. The bedrooms to the ground floor where possible have direct access to small private patios. The home will provide a high standard of living and communal accommodation utilising a mix of traditional and modern materials in a modern contemporary style.
This scheme which boasts a double height entrance hall, also features numerous communal spaces including a pub, shop, a gym for the wellbeing of the residents plus a hair and beauty salon. These facilities are scattered throughout the building to provide the future residents with a care home that will offer them an opportunity to keep their mind, body and soul active. The home is both fresh and vibrant to energise the residents whilst providing the most up to date care facilities in order to assist the carers in their invaluable roles.
