Center for Diabetes Research, Munich

Open design competition – Winning project

Project under HDR

The project was won via an open design competition, the building accommodating the newly formed German diabetes centre based on the Helmholtz Institute’s Munich Campus.

The Center of Integrated Diabetes Research at the Helmholtz Center in Munich was a four-storey, multidis-ciplinary Life Science Research Center dedicated to diabetes research.

The Biosafety Level 2 research facility will facilitate basic research, translational research, epidemiology and clinical applications in more than 4,700sqm of space.

Positioned against this was a circulation stair which allowed visitors and potential sponsors to be brought up through the building, viewing into the research areas and culminating on top of the building in a roof top beer garden and café with views towards Munich and the Alps.
