MVRDV has won the competition to redesign Tirana's Asllan Rusi Sports Palace as a massive spherical landmark. The over-100-meter orb will contain a 6,000-seat arena for basketball and volleyball, surrounded by apartments, hotels, shops, and training facilities. Residential floors project outward to form a dramatic skylight above the court, while a double-layered shell creates a communal rooftop garden topped by a glazed dome. The spherical form maximizes usable space on a compact site and frees the ground level for public plazas. Positioned on the main route from the airport to the city center, it becomes a new icon in Tirana's 2030 master plan.
