Multi-sports stadium, Belfast, Ireland
Multi-sports stadium, Belfast, Ireland
Scheme design images for the proposed multi-sports Stadium at the Maze / Long Kesh prison site in Northern Ireland have been revealed by HOK sport architecture.

The plans have incorporated elements of the controversial “H” Block prison which became a major symbol of British rule when internment (imprisonment without trial) was introduced at the height of “The Troubles”. The ruling Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) have objected to the “shrine-like” nature of the plans and labeled them as “unacceptable”.

The unique design will incorporate rugby, football and Gaelic sports and will provide a landmark venue for Northern Ireland and an asset for the local community.

The Stadium Design brings together a range of different requirements in a cohesive whole. John Barrow, Senior Principal at HOK Sport spoke of the design intent “our vision is for a world class stadium for world class supporters – the people of Northern Ireland. This will be a stadium where every seat in the house is the best seat, and one which will be an exemplar for comfort, safety, accessibility and sustainability.”

The Northern Ireland Assembly must approve the business case for the scheme before a planning application can be made.
