The interior design of a modern restaurant with exposed ceiling
Our client for this project approached us for the interior design of his new restaurant. He liked a cozy yet modern atmosphere for his restaurant, and with more discussion, we understood what he meant by “modern.” What was in his mind was a brutal kind of interior, a factory-like space with ventilation and electrical installation exposed, as he wanted it to look casual and like an every-day place to visit.
He emphasized on the every-day function of this restaurant, with informal table bars for a quick lunch or only a drink, a casual meeting, but he also wanted a division where food would be served more formally, and customers could prolong their presence leisurely.
Based on these ideas, our design team started the design by determining the main zones of the restaurant: the informal and formal dining areas, the open kitchen, and the entrance. We placed the informal dining area next to the entrance, at the center of the space.
Around this zone, two other zones are located, the kitchen at on the side of the informal rectangular area, and the formal dining area at the other two sides of the informal area creating an L shaped area at a corner of the serving areas.
The informal and formal areas are separated by a multifunctional shared table, which functions as a supporting surface for waiters to serve food, a surface for directly serve the food or a working surface for preparing food in an exhibitive way at the center of the sitting area of the restaurant.
Like the community bar tables selected for the informal dining area, the multifunctional shared table surface is of hardwood, creating the raw and casual feeling for space.
The division between informal and formal area is achieved not only by placing the shared table, but the flooring materials of each area are different, with natural stone for informal area and parquet for the formal area. Also, the tables and chairs are different, based on their function.
Small stools with metal legs, like the bar tables’ legs, work as the chairs for the informal area, making it feasible to accommodate more costumers in the space, and enhancing the casual style of its function. On the contrary, the formal area is filled with spacious round tables with tablecloths, and comfortable soft chairs that invite costumers to stay as long as they please.
The last row of the tables was again selected in a rectangular form and wooden, adding more variety to space. At this row the ceiling is also different, the brutal false ceiling ends at the edge of the tables, leaving the ceiling simple and white, with a row of pendant lights.
The walls of the restaurant are exposed to bricks or concrete, based on the aesthetics are designers visualized. To add life to space, some flower vases were placed on the walls, hanging from the ceiling or on the tables of the formal dining area, but our architectural visualization team where Cautious not to overset the space by placing too many vases in it.
